Some describe them as ‘slow-core.’ Some label them as "Joy Division meets Simon & Garfunkel." Some call them Mormons. Whatever the label, Low’s unique style of minimalist instrumentation and powerful lyrics are helping to thrust them out of small-scale obscurity and into the indie mainstream with the upcoming release of Things We Lost In The Fire.
Guitarist/singer Alan Sparhawk, percussionist/singer Mimi Parker and bassist Zak Sally spent most of the time after the release of their second album, Long Division, touring with the likes of Soul Coughing, Luna and Spectrum. It was here on the road that Low met producer Steve Fisk, aficionado for Subpop Records who went on to produce the band’s album The Curtain Hits The Cast.
The Minnesota natives even commissioned the talents of Steve Albini – famed producer for Nirvana, The Breeders, PJ Harvey, and the Pixies – for their album Secret Name. It’s interesting to note that Albini said no when Courtney Love approached him about working with her on the latest Hole album, but the magic man said yes to Low. Hmmm, very interesting.
Low’s music may be slow, but that’s just the tempo. According to NME, "Low aren’t miserable for a moment. Reflective, yes. Poignant, to be sure. But a belly full of warmth to the finish."
