Grandaddy started in Modesto, California in the early 90's. Singer / guitarist Jason Lytle, the main power behind the band, joined with bassist Kevin Garcia and drummer Aaron Burtch. The trio put down their skateboards and began with noisy, lo-fi songs on 1994's Complex Party Come Along Theories. A year later, guitarist Jim Fairchild and keyboardist Time Dryden entered the fold and altered the band's sound.

New electronic textures were obvious on A Pretty Mess by This One Band (1996). This was followed by Grandaddy's first full-length, Under the Western Freeway, in 1997. Western Freeway was a creative breakthrough and caught the attention of V2 Records, as well as critical ears. There was trouble getting this record out in the United States, so it was released first in Europe. The UK dug it, but the States were slow to warm up (like that's something new). Grandaddy's slowly making a name in their home country and in 2000, Sophtware Slump was released.
