Though billed as a band, Badly Drawn Boy boils down to one person. Damon Gough is the voice, player and creative genius behind the winner of one of Britain's greatest musical awards, The Mercury Prize of 2000.

Gough believes in the power of music and has since he was born in Bolton, England. After leaving school, he worked in his parents' printing business, listening to his own music on a Walkman and developing it into full songs.

He moved to Manchester and met a graphic designer and DJ, Andy Votel. The two set up a record label called Twisted Nerve. It released 2 Badly Drawn Boy EP's. In late 1997, Mark E. Smith of The Fall mistook Gough's car for a taxi outside a bar. Smith demanded a ride home, which Gough exchanged for The Fall recording a Badly Drawn Boy song called "Tumbleweed."

Badly Drawn Boy signed to XL Recordings and released The Hour of Bewilderbeast in the UK (U.S. release on Beggar's Banquet, 2000). He appeared on the bill at all major British summer music festivals this past summer.
